Safety and carbon monoxide

Always outdoors or under an extractor hood

Burning charcoal releases carbon monoxide (CO), an invisible and odourless gas, even when there is no smoke. Never use charcoal, a barbecue or a kamado in a closed room, a garage, a tent or a vehicle.

  • Use charcoal outdoors or under a suitable extractor hood.
  • Do not move a ceramic barbecue while it is lit: the ceramic stays very hot.
  • Let the embers cool completely before emptying the ash.

If you get a headache, nausea or dizziness near a fire, ventilate immediately, go outside and call the emergency services (112 in Europe).
